A dispensary is a licensed storefront for selling cannabis legally in California. The term derives from the days of medical marijuana, where you had to go to a dispensary and register as a patient to get your medicine.
Now that dispensaries no longer only serve medicinal patients, they are sometimes called stores or shops. But the older term dispensary still applies, and specifically refers to a licensed cannabis storefront.
Most cities in California put a limit as to how many dispensaries can operate. As a result, many places in California don’t have dispensaries. In those places, sometimes only delivery services are available.
Delivery services are not always part of a dispensary.
