Type: Terms

Marijuana is another term for cannabis, especially as smoked or consumed as a psychoactive (mind-altering) drug.

Marijuana was the preferred language used by law enforcement to criminalize cannabis. It is thought that the term’s connection to Mexico and the Spanish language helped to associate at it negatively with a foreign country, and helped to mobilize racism towards Mexicans in order to make cannabis seem dangerous.

Today, marijuana is still used in the cannabis industry, but much less so. Some people of Mexican descent have taken ownership of the term, while others find its racist past to be off-putting.
