California Proposition 215, Medical Marijuana Initiative (1996). Proposition 215 exempted patients and defined caregivers who possess or cultivate marijuana for medical treatment recommended by a physician.
Prop 215 was effectively the legalization of weed in California for medical purposes.
In 2016, voters passed Prop 64, which superseded Prop 215 by allowing the sale of recreational marijuana.
