traditional market

The traditional market refers to the non-regulated, unlicensed market of buying and selling weed.  This usually takes place outside of licensed dispensaries. Previously known as the black market, the term traditional market is considered more respectful and accurate.

The traditional market has existed in California since the early 20th century. It thrived during prohibition and remains today still the dominant weed market in California.

As of the early part of the 2020s, the legal, regulated market accounts for only about 25% of sales, whereas the traditional market makes up about 75% of all weed sales.
