A live benefit event called “I Got 5 On It” scheduled for June 16th will raise funds to “aid in the rebuilding of Bay Area businesses that were damaged during the recent riots and to support the Movement for Black Lives,” according to the official website igot5onit.live.
Scheduled for Tupak Shakur’s birthday on 6/16, the live event will be broadcast starting at 5pm PST. Watch the live event on YouTube.
The event is using GoFundMe to make their goal of raising $55,555 for rebuilding local businesses and to be donated to M4BL.org.
Many dispensaries in the bay area and in the L.A. area were looted when mass protests in response to the murder of George Floyd broke out at the end of May. Since the weekend riots started, Black-owned Oakland dispensary Blunts + Moore has been closed. Their website message reads “We are temporarily closed due to the Bay area cannabis business break ins over the May 31st weekend. We are fighting to reopen as soon as possible and we appreciate your continued support. Please check back June 22nd.” The dispensary is using the time to rebuild and is using the “I Got 5 On It” benefit to help others do the same.
Sponsored by the Blunts + Moore dispensary and backed by Cookies, Weedmaps, and Saucey, the virtual online event will be hosted by the dispensary’s founder Alphonso “Tucky” Blunt Jr.
Artists and influencers scheduled to appear include Berner, Yukmouth (of the Luniz), Mistah F.A.B., Iamsu!, Jim Jones, Cam’ron, Jane Handcock, Tia Nomore, Smoke DZA, Money B (of the Digital Underground), Mike Marshall, Scarface, Richie Rich, SOBxRBX, M1 (Dead Prez), Astu, B-Legit, Bigvon, Cellski, Cuzzin Dre, Raheem Devaughn, D’Wayne Wiggins, Sistah Iminah, Mike Tyson, B-Real, Isiah Thomas, Mopreme Shakur, Slink Johnson, Deju Vu Bella, Kuzzo Fly, and Netta Brielle.
“I Got Five On It” is a saying popularized by the 1995 song by the Luniz referring to the fact that everyone who’s sitting around sharing a blunt should contribute $5 to the pot: “Unless you pull out the fat, crispy / Five dollar bill on the real before it’s history / Cause fools be having them vacuum lungs / An’ if you let ’em hit it for free you hella dum-da-dum-dumb.” The fundraiser requests a donation of $5, hinting at the fact that the weed community has always come together and supported itself.
Sponsors who have donated to put on the event also represent the California weed community. Sponsors of the event include popular cannabis-associated brands like High Hopes Supply Company, Vesl, Moe Greens Dispensary, Empire, G Pen, Tyson Ranch, Berner’s on Haight, Top Shelf Tucky, No Vultures podcast, HCGA, Grizzly Peak, 34, The Black Bay Area, Green Hummingbird Farm, Sierra Sungrown, Queen Hippy Gypsy, Bianca Starr, Gift of Doja, 2Took Farms, Viola, The People’s Dispensary, The Smoker’s Club, Black Rain, Push, The Green Door, Al Pastor Papi, Jetfuel, Stiiizy, United Playaz, Barbary Coast, Tical, High-End Affair, Dr. Greenthumbs, and Oaksterdam University.
