Los Angeles cannabis cultivator Edgar Peña aka Masonic with Masonic Seeds is best known for his Wilson strain, which has found its way into numerous strains in the industry. This past Saturday, his shop Masonic’s on Fairfax was the place to get his new drop, a side project called the “No Wilson” Line.

“I’m known for using Wilson only in all my crosses. I put it on everything. That’s my male,” Masonic said. “This new project doesn’t have any Wilson.” (Masonic created Wilson by crossing Banana OG x Papaya x Tropicana).

Masonic has been working on this project for a while, which he calls a side project.

“It’s a few males that I chose intentionally to cross to another selection of females that I hunted through, and that’s what the ‘No Wilson’ Line is,” Masonic explained.

The potential male fathers are Dark Rainbow from Archive Seeds (Rainbow Beltz x GMO), Pure Faceoff Thai Root Beer from Source, and Violet Flame Underfire from Select Genetics.

“It’s kind of like hitting three birds with one stone by using those three males in this project,” Masonic said. “They’re just completely different terpene profiles, so they’ll be easy to distinguish when you grow them out.”

I’ve done this before, and people loved it. It’s just me doing something I’ve done before and switching it up. It’s art.

The project is what Masonic calls an “open pollination” using three different males, which is not typical for breeders to do.

Masonic says he did this open pollination project once before, about five years ago, and got a great reception. Still, it’s unusual.

“People like to box in their method,” Masonic said. “I’ve done this before, and people loved it. It’s just me doing something I’ve done before and switching it up,” he said. “It’s art.”

Breeders, he said, will do an open pollination to do the opposite of a bottleneck, to open up the strains.

It doesn’t mean he’s abandoning Wilson any time soon.

“Wilson is still the main pollinator,” he said. “This open pollination was side mission, real quick.”

Masonic hopes that this limited-edition drop will be inspiring to other growers and will yield some finds.

“My vision is what they’re going to want a piece of, plus the Pandoras Box of the potential that you could get from this seed stock,” Masonic said.
